The government tax us a lot, am I right? We pay extra for petrol, tobacco, alcohol, and now even sugar. But have you ever wondered what your money is being spent on? According to Theresa May, income tax is “the price we pay for living in a civilised society”. If you want to know how much income tax you should be paying, if you’ve been overpaying, and if you’re entitled to a tax rebate, then keep reading.
I’ve done a few of these posts in the past, and they’ve always been quite popular. I think that’s because people assume that waitressing is a dead end career. No one can actually make a living by serving tables. It was obvious that you lot have been quite shocked by my income report. And when I talk about tips I always get a comment or a tweet. Another reason you might love these posts is because a lot of you are in USA, where waitresses make the majority of their salary up with tips. Waitressing in the UK is very different to waitressing in America. Firstly, we have a legal minimum wage. That means that everybody is entitled to a certain hourly rate, without tips being calculated into that. That means that we receive smaller tips in general. 10% or more is seen as a good tip. People don’t feel the need to tip their waiting staff over here, because they get paid either way.
